5 top tips to get your skin autumn ready

It’s been quite the summer – record temperatures, scorching sunny days and a heatwave that never seemed to end. But, if you ask us, we’ve always had a soft spot for the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. Here in Yorkshire, it’s always beautiful to see the leaves change colour and the nights slowly draw in – time to get cosy as nature cools herself down.

Autumn itself, however, poses many challenges for our skin – changing temperatures and moisture levels at the turn of the season can have all kinds of negative effects. So, as we say goodbye to summer and try to remember where we put our jackets, here’s our top 5 tips on getting your skin ready for the autumn. Get yourself a nice cup of something warm and let’s dive in…

  1. Nourish your skin from within
It’s not just the weather that changes over autumn. As the nights and the cold draw in, our metabolism also slows down – so it’s important to keep up your vitamin and nutrient intake to keep skin looking and feeling fresh, clear and healthy. Omega oils, fatty acids and vitamins should feature in your diet anyway, more so as the season changes, but you can also gain the benefits of these nutrients through your skin. Many of our treatments – from our Signature Collection Facial Serums right through to our Enhanced Recovery Body Oils – are rich in vitamins, acids and oils that deliver benefits to the skin and deeper still, together with fragrances that stimulate the senses and boost the immune system at a time of year when you need it most.
  2. Keep moisturised
Autumn winds can send temperatures plummeting, and the cold air can leave skin feeling dry and lifeless. So, it’s essential to maintain moisture balance through a careful regimen of hydration. Yes, that does involve plenty of fluids (ours is a tea, no sugar, thanks), but it also means choosing and using the right moisturising treatments for your skin, especially for faces and hands that are exposed to the elements on those brisk autumn walks. Our Clary Sage & Juniper Berry Face Scrub, for example, moisturises while helping to balance oil levels in the skin, while our Hand & Cuticle Oil helps to heal, hydrate and thoroughly nourish hands and nails – so, whatever the weather, you can keep dry, irritated skin at bay.
  3. Gentle cleansing is your friend
The very same changes in wind and weather can also, over time, deposit impurities within pores – but deep cleansers, like scrubs or salt-based facial washes, can further strip the moisture from skin, leaving it drier and more irritated than before. When the temperature drops, it pays to balance deep cleansing action, day and night, with moisturising oils and remedies that help to tighten and smooth skin without any harshness. Gently does it: our Face Scrubs and Neroli & Ylang Ylang Foot & Leg Scrub balance this pore-purifying effectiveness with a blend of oils that nourish and enrich skin, without the harshness of summer cleansers.
  4. Stay SPF savvy
Even in late autumn, the sun hasn’t gone anywhere – and neither should your SPF. Even when you’re waking up to a grey sky or autumnal drizzle, the sun’s still there, and – especially for sensitive skin – you should stay protected. That’s not to say you should slap on the factor 50 on a December day, but you can bring natural sun protection into your daily regime. Many of our treatments, including our Elemi & Black Pepper Post-shave Balm and May Chang & Frankincense Foot & Leg Balm , contain all-natural ingredients like avocado butter, coconut butter and grapeseed oil, which all impart light yet proven protection from the sun – even when you wouldn’t think you’d need it.
  5. Don’t forget to treat yourself
Finally, as the days get darker and duller, it’s super important to keep your spirits up by treating yourself occasionally. We all need a bit of me time, whether that’s wrapping up with a good book next to the fire or indulging in a little self-care. Our Face Masks – both Charcoal & Himalayan Pink Salt and Green Clay & Rosewood – even with just a 10-minute treatment can treat the skin and uplift the mind. Or our Vetiver & Patchouli Massage Oil can create a naturally relaxing, rejuvenating, restful remedy for body and spirit. Whatever your indulgence, autumn’s the perfect time to enjoy it a little more – after all, it’s just what you need to get you through the long, dark nights with more radiant skin and a brighter outlook.
